The Alarm Phone platform, which specializes in reporting migrants stranded at sea, announced today, Monday, the loss of 23 people who sailed from the coast of Algeria a week ago.
According to the information published by the platform through its account on the “X” website, the migrants were lost on board two boats at sea on two separate trips.
The first boat, which had 17 migrants on board, left the coast of the Zeralda region in Algeria on the fourth of this month, while the second boat was carrying six people and left the coast of Algeria two days later for the Spanish coast.
There is no information available about their fate to date.
The platform said, "The authorities have taken note of those missing at sea and must respond to their search and rescue missions."
As the weather conditions change in the Mediterranean, the migrants’ adventure to cross to the northern bank becomes more dangerous.
The Sea Watch organization said that its rescue ship rescued 51 people on Sunday night, including a pregnant woman, who were on a boat about to sink, after receiving a notification from the “alarm phone” platform.
It also helped 28 others, about half of whom were minors who were on board a crowded rubber boat in international waters, to escape drowning.
According to data from the “Missing Migrants” project of the International Organization for Migration, 1,980 people died or went missing this year while crossing the Mediterranean.
