A 16-year-old boy opened fire inside an elementary school in Bend, Oregon, on Thursday, killing three children and an adult, before the attacker was killed at the scene by a community member who chased him into the school.

Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz said authorities found the suspect dead inside the school minutes after the shooting was first reported.

The three children are ages 5, 8 and 11, Krantz said. He added that another 7-year-old child and a 54-year-old adult were injured and taken to hospital in critical condition.

Police said that the attacker, a resident of the city of Bend, forced his way into the school after shooting at its closed doors. Police spokeswoman Sheila Miller confirmed that the suspect was killed inside the school a few minutes after police forces arrived at the site.

Krantz said the first emergency call came in just before 1:00 p.m. from a person in a car outside Silver Rail Elementary School who reported being shot by someone carrying a long gun.

Miller said other emergency calls came in from inside the school, and police arrived on the scene within minutes.

Police said they did not know whether the attacker knew anyone at the school or whether they had studied there.
