America is facing an “irreversible hour”... The battle to end the time change falters in Congress

An attempt to end the tradition of moving forward and delaying the clock twice a year has faltered in the US Senate, in a remarkable development, after the Senate session ended this week without the bill being put to a vote.

This comes despite significant political pressure to pass the legislation before the November elections.

The project, known as the Sunshine Protection Act, aims to keep states that use daylight saving time on daylight saving time year-round, so that the clocks do not revert to standard time in November. The House of Representatives approved the project in July by a majority of 308 votes to 117.

Under current rules, most US states are scheduled to return to standard time at 2 a.m. on November 1, 2026; That is, Americans will get an extra hour of sleep, unless a new law is issued before that time.

The story is not about the watch alone, but about what its change means in everyday life. Supporters of keeping daylight saving time year-round say the extra hours of daylight in the evening could benefit economic and recreational activities, while opponents warn that winter would mean a very late sunrise in many areas, which could cause some children and staff to start the day in the dark.

Ironically, the United States had previously implemented daylight saving time throughout the year in 1974, but the experiment did not last long, as the law was repealed in the same year after it became unpopular with a wide segment of Americans.

As for now, the draft has not become law, so there is no immediate change: the clock will return to the current system in November. It is expected that the issue will return to the forefront when the Senate resumes its work after the November 3 elections.

What is striking is that the United States is not even united on this issue. Hawaii and most of Arizona do not observe daylight saving time, while almost all other states are under the current federal system.
