The Libyan parliament announced today, Tuesday, the election of Deputy Salehin Abdul Nabi Al-Abidi as its president, in a move that may end the presidency of Aguila Saleh, which has lasted for years, amid a legal dispute regarding the legitimacy of the procedures taken to change its presidency.
Al-Abidi's election came during a session held by the parliament in the city of Benghazi, chaired by the second deputy, Misbah Doma, and attended by more than 100 deputies.
This came a day after 98 deputies in the parliament voted to amend its internal regulations and form a new presidency, ending the work of the current presidency office led by Aguila Saleh, during a session attended by 102 deputies.
However, Aguila Saleh rejected the outcomes of this session, considering them unofficial and without any legal effect, asserting that the procedures taken by the deputies do not adhere to the rules governing the council's work, and he called for the cancellation of the session he had called for today, Tuesday, and to postpone it to another date.
The election of the representative from the Tobruk district, Salehin Al-Abaidi, is considered the most significant change in the leadership of the legislative authority in Libya since Aguila Saleh assumed the presidency of the House of Representatives in 2014, which may open the door to rearranging the balance of power within the parliament and the political scene.
This step gains additional importance in light of the multiple political tracks in Libya, including the roadmap sponsored by the United Nations, the "4+4" track, and the "6+6" track related to electoral laws, which are files whose implementation is linked to the positions and decisions of the parliament.
