German Foreign Minister Johann Vadevol escalated his tone against Moscow, following his fruitless meeting with his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
After the recent intense Russian attacks on Ukraine, which resulted in many civilian casualties, Vadevol launched a sharp attack on Russia, threatening to impose wide-ranging sanctions. He said in statements to the German News Agency (DPA) in Berlin: “Putin’s brutality knows no bounds.”
He also added that Russian President Vladimir Putin continues his "terrorism with missiles against the Ukrainian people and many children with increasing intensity," stressing that Putin will nevertheless fail "in the face of Ukraine's resistance, and in the face of Germany's continued support for its defense."
In addition, Vadivul said that the past days have proven that the Russian President is betting entirely on escalation, noting that dozens of civilians, including children, have been killed during the past three days alone. He also added that residential homes, as happened in the city of Priluki, are being deliberately destroyed night after night, while people are being killed in their sleep. “This attrition tactic is incredibly brutal,” he said.
The Minister recalled that last Wednesday, the European Union allocated an additional 1.2 billion euros for air defense in Ukraine with the aim of saving lives.
He also stressed that his country "will significantly increase pressure on the Russian war economy and its supporters through new sanctions," explaining that the final steps are currently being agreed upon in Brussels, to ensure that the most comprehensive sanctions package to date, which targets individuals and companies, enters into force soon. “This will also greatly affect Russia’s ability to attack Ukraine,” he said.
European Union foreign policy chief Kaya Kallas announced that preparations are underway to impose sanctions on 1,600 additional people and companies linked to the Russian military industrial sector.
While in the Ukrainian city of Priluki alone, at least 19 people were killed and 55 others were injured in recent Russian attacks, according to what Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced. He pointed out that five children were among the dead, while five other children were injured. The attack targeted a five-story residential building in the city, located about 120 kilometers east of the capital, Kiev.
