- Britain's King Charles III announced that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex - Prince Harry and Meghan "will remain non-working members of the Royal Family and will not carry out any official duties on behalf of the Crown", after their return to the United Kingdom after 6 years spent in the United States. In a letter sent on behalf of the King on Monday, the Chief of the Royal Household, Lord Chamberlain, said: “It is known that the Duke and Duchess stepped down in January 2020 from performing their representative duties on behalf of the King, and are no longer working members of the Royal Family.”
The senior palace official added in the letter, which was addressed to senior government and military officials, as well as the Duke's team, that this status "will continue to be fully respected," and continued: "There is no change in the current status of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex." Sources told Ofoq News Network that the letter was issued to confirm the status of the Sussex family after several requests for clarification, with the start of the new period of the royal family’s agenda.
Prince Harry and Meghan left the United Kingdom for North America in 2020 after stepping down from their royal duties, and the subsequent years witnessed a public dispute with the royal family. Despite this troubled family history, the couple returned to the country late last month, accompanied by their two children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, who are enrolled in British schools.
According to the letter, all charitable work carried out by Harry and Meghan is “a personal matter for them and undertaken in their private capacity,” and added: “In short, their position is similar to that of ordinary citizens with commercial and charitable interests.” She added that all correspondence and administrative inquiries related to the couple should be sent directly to their office, “which will continue to operate independently of the royal court.”
Ofoq News contacted the Duke and Duchess of Sussex for comment.
