Tunisian actress Dorra Zarrouk published photos and video clips on her official Instagram account, during her participation in the twelfth session of the Djerba International Women and Youth Film Festival, which was held on the Tunisian island of Djerba. Zarrouk caught attention by wearing a gold piece that recalls features of the Tunisian textile heritage, which was reintroduced with a contemporary vision within a design called “Amrour” from the Tunisian house NÉE.
Shams Mishri, the house’s founder and creative director, revealed in an interview with the Ofoq News website in Arabic, the details of the design, which is based on a traditional Tunisian embroidered dress dating back to 1948, known as the “qamja”. The original piece is distinguished by its delicate embroidery, copper metal threads and sequins, in a composition that reflects an aspect of the traditional craftsmanship associated with occasions and weddings in Tunisia.
The development of "Amrur" took several months of research, restoration and structural reconstruction. The Tunisian designer explained that she studied the original cuts, shapes, and proportions of the piece, in addition to the embroidery formations, with the aim of rebuilding its formal structure while preserving its historical integrity, instead of simply reusing the old fabric.
She added that this work comes within a creative approach followed by the Tunisian brand, which explores the relationship between cultural heritage and the identity associated with the place and contemporary design, by re-presenting inherited craftsmanship and heritage materials in designs that carry cultural connotations in a modern formulation.
