King Saud University obtained a US patent for a Tri-Leaflet Mechanical Heart Valve, invented by Dr. Rakan bin Ibrahim Nazer, Professor of Cardiac Sciences in the Department of Cardiac Sciences at the University’s College of Medicine.
The invention is based on a mechanical design consisting of three moving leaflets, connected to a central mechanism and a peripheral ring, allowing them to be opened and closed in a coordinated manner to regulate blood flow and limit its reflux.
The invention represents a new concept in the design of mechanical heart valves, as it aims to develop the mechanism of movement of the leaflets and the path of blood flow compared to traditional designs.
The patent adds to King Saud University's record in the field of medical innovation, supporting efforts to develop mechanical heart valve technologies.
