The Kuwaiti Ministry of Interior announced, on Friday, that three Syrians and two Egyptians had been arrested. It said they “exploited a charitable project to collect in-kind donations and resell them, and benefit from the proceeds for their personal benefit.” The Kuwaiti Ministry of Interior said in a statement on its official account on the “X” platform, previously Twitter, on Friday: “The criminal security sector, represented by the General Directorate of Criminal Investigation, was able to uncover the incident of exploiting a charitable project to collect in-kind donations, resell them, and benefit from their proceeds for a personal benefit. Five defendants were involved: 3 of Syrian nationality and 2 of Egyptian nationality, as part of ongoing security efforts to combat crimes.”
The Kuwaiti Ministry of Interior stated in its statement that “investigations conducted by the Jahra Governorate Investigation Department, represented by the Sulaibiya Investigation Office, showed that a furniture moving company had rented a website and phone belonging to one of the charitable association’s projects through one of its employees, without the knowledge of the association’s members, and used them to receive donations of clothing, electronic devices, furniture, and food, after misleading the donors that it was intended to support the project and achieve its goals.” The Kuwaiti Ministry of Interior explained that the defendants were "receiving donations through a number of representatives, then seizing them and selling them in local markets, or exporting them abroad to benefit from their financial value, without directing them to the purposes for which they were collected."
The Kuwaiti Ministry of Interior continued: “It was found that this activity was repeated under the umbrella of the charitable project, and monthly profits estimated at about 60 thousand dinars were achieved from the disposal of these donations. The company’s warehouse located in the Amghara region was also reached, and the necessary measures were taken regarding the seizures and the completion of procedures related to the incident.”
