- On Monday, U.S. President Donald Trump attributed the rise in gasoline prices in the United States to the destruction of Russian oil refineries, denying that the situation in the Strait of Hormuz was the cause. Trump wrote on the platform "Truth Social": "The Strait of Hormuz is no longer the reason for the rise in gasoline prices."
"Record amounts of oil are now being pumped almost daily." He continued: "The problem lies with the refineries; Russian refineries are being destroyed by Ukraine, while our refineries in the states controlled by the Democrats (the blue states) - such as California - are being shut down."
On Sunday, Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf reiterated his country's position that the Strait of Hormuz will remain closed until the seven conditions set by Iran are met, criticizing what he described as the "contradiction" in the American rhetoric between military threats and the declaration of a desire to negotiate. Qalibaf stated that these conditions are based on the memorandum of understanding signed in Islamabad between Iran and the United States, pointing out that "Iran will not mortgage its national security to the statements or tweets issued by American officials," according to the official Iranian news agency "IRNA."
He added, "The proposals that Washington has presented through intermediaries will not change the firmness of the Iranian position; the time for imposing unilateral demands and dictates has ended," according to the IRNA news agency. The American president announced last month that he expects talks with Iran to continue after rejecting an Iranian proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
Trump said in an interview with Axios: "I expect more talks with Iran (this week). They want to reach an agreement, but it is not the agreement that I want."
It is the agreement that we might have agreed to a year ago; they have overestimated their position.
