- British counter-terrorism police announced, on Tuesday, the re-arrest of two men as part of ongoing investigations into an incident that occurred last month at Fairford Air Base, a base where American B-1 bombers are stationed. The police said, in a statement, that a 24-year-old British citizen and another 25-year-old who holds dual British and Iranian citizenship were re-arrested on suspicion of providing assistance to a foreign (Iranian) intelligence service.
Senior counter-terrorism police official Lawrence Taylor said: “So far, 7 men have been arrested in connection with our investigations, and as a result of the continued efforts of our officers, two of them were today re-arrested on charges relating to Section 3 of the National Security Act, which is providing assistance to a foreign intelligence service.” Taylor added: "Investigations are still ongoing, and we are continuing to collect evidence, but our position at the present time has not changed, as we strongly believe that there is involvement on the part of the Iranian state." As for the other five men, they are currently out of custody on bail, and the police did not reveal the names of any of them.
In late September, British authorities announced the initial arrest of five men “on suspicion of preparing a terrorist act” and committing explosives-related offenses near the Fairford base, long used by the US Air Force. Army units specialized in dismantling explosives and police personnel were deployed in the area, and civilian homes surrounding the base were evacuated.
Earlier this month, British Prime Minister Andy Burnham said that the suspected plot targeting the Fairford base was “most likely directed by the Iranian Revolutionary Guard.” For its part, Iran categorically rejected these accusations.
US President Donald Trump praised the arrests at the time, telling reporters that the United States worked in coordination with Britain, and that the detainees were planning to cause “serious damage” to the base. "We've been watching them for a long time, and we were able to catch them," Trump said.
According to multiple sources familiar with the matter, US intelligence had monitored plans drawn up by Iranian groups to target American assets at the base, weeks before any arrests were made. It is also likely that residents of the areas surrounding the base submitted reports to the authorities, and in an interview with the Ufoq News network, one of the residents - who preferred to remain anonymous - stated that she called the police after she saw three trucks, surrounded by between eight and ten masked men, blocking the entrance to her house.
In an interview with Sky News, the British Defense Minister, Wes Streeting, expressed his thanks to the woman for making the emergency call, noting that she only had a “partial picture” of the situation, without providing further details. The developments did not stop there; Days after the initial arrests, the United States transferred all of its long-range bombers from the Fairford base after receiving a threat whose nature was not revealed, according to an informed source.
At the time, both Donald Trump and Vice President J.D. Vance suggested that a threat against US assets prompted the action. There have been some threats, and instead of giving the enemy a chance, we will capture and defeat them, but why keep the planes there?
For his part, Vance explained that this step came “out of extreme caution and caution,” noting that it was a response to a potential threat from Iran, although he refused to go into details of the specific concerns, and as of Tuesday, none of the American bombers had returned to the base.
