Amid continuing mutual threats between Tehran and Washington, Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqir Qalibaf renewed his country's positions regarding indirect negotiations with the United States and the opening of the Strait of Hormuz.
The Iranian chief negotiator said on Sunday, “Our positions are clear, and the Strait of Hormuz will not be reopened unless our 7 conditions are met in accordance with the memorandum of understanding” that was signed last June.
He also hinted that the United States had presented new proposals to his country. He continued, saying: “The Americans who say something else in the media have recently sent proposals through intermediaries,” according to what was reported by the “Noor News” website.
In addition, Qalibaf considered that “Washington must realize that the stage of wasting time and imposing unilateral demands has ended,” he said.
Last month, Tehran presented a plan to stop hostilities and reopen Hormuz, through which before the war a fifth of the world's oil and gas production passed.
The plan, which Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi discussed through the Qatari mediator, with Steve Witkoff, US President Donald Trump’s envoy, on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly meetings in New York, stipulated a cessation of hostilities on all fronts for a period of seven days, including in Lebanon, the release of frozen Iranian assets, the lifting of sanctions imposed on Iranian oil, and an end to the US naval blockade imposed on the ports, as a precondition for opening this vital waterway.
However, Trump rejected that plan in a post on his account on the “Truth Social” platform last week.
Meanwhile, informed sources and officials indicated that the Trump administration would like to pressure the Iranian side in order to obtain more concessions in the nuclear file.
