Qatar signs a memorandum of understanding for military cooperation with 3 countries

- On Wednesday, the countries of Qatar, Turkey, Pakistan and Indonesia signed a multilateral memorandum of understanding with the aim of enhancing cooperation in the field of manufacturing and defense capabilities. The Qatari Ministry of Defense said in a statement that the signing of the Badr Memorandum of Understanding is a step that “reflects the commitment to strengthening joint cooperation and developing strategic partnerships.”

The statement indicated that the memorandum of understanding aims to "cooperate in the field of defense manufacturing, enhance defense capabilities between the four countries, and cooperate in the field of technical defense training and areas of research and development, which contributes to finding solutions and industries worthy of the development of modern defenses." “The memorandum is of great economic importance to the signatory countries, as the capabilities of each country in the field of defense manufacturing will be exploited, in order to achieve cooperation, integration and development of the capabilities of defense industries, which meets the needs of allied and friendly countries,” according to the Qatari statement.

The official Turkish Anadolu Agency also quoted a statement from the Ministry of Defence, saying that the memorandum was signed by Turkish Defense Minister Yasar Guler, Qatari Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of State for Defense Affairs Saud bin Abdul Rahman bin Hassan Al Thani, Indonesian Deputy Defense Minister Yusuf Johari, and Pakistani Defense Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif. The Turkish Ministry explained that "the initiative will contribute to developing solutions and forming industrial sectors in line with the development of modern defense systems."

The memorandum will also contribute to expanding the horizons of military cooperation between the participating countries, developing their relations in the defense industries sector, and enhancing multilateral cooperation in a way that supports security and stability and helps achieve common goals, according to Anadolu. This comes in light of regional tensions and attempts to build alliances in the region, as there is a joint defense agreement between Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Pakistan known as the “Mecca Pact,” at a time when the Gulf states have been subjected to Iranian attacks.
