On Sunday, US President Donald Trump continued his attack against Democratic Senate candidate Abdel Rahman Al-Sayyed, describing him as a "jihadist" and referring to him as "Muhammad." Trump said during an election rally in Port Huron: “I am here to prevent a jihadist and a member of the Muslim Brotherhood from reaching the United States Senate. This is the truth, and I will not allow that to happen.”
The Muslim Brotherhood became a focus of controversy in the Michigan Senate race. Republicans are trying to portray Al-Sayed as sympathetic to parties linked to Islamic terrorism, while the candidate asserts that he is being subjected to unjust accusations of having “dual loyalties,” the same accusation that was previously directed at Presidents John F. Kennedy and Barack Obama. Last weekend, Al-Sayyed denounced the Muslim Brotherhood - an Islamic political movement founded in Egypt in 1928 - during a heated debate with a constituent, and later in statements to reporters, in response to Republican efforts to highlight his family's ties to the group and his previous statements about it.
Trump continued to embrace this rhetoric on Sunday, claiming that Al-Sayyid wants the United States to “implement Islamic law,” adding that anyone with such a record “will be subject to scrutiny and will not even be allowed to board a plane.” It is noteworthy that Al-Sayyid has always stressed that the focus on his religion is nothing but an attempt to divert attention from the growing popular anger towards the leadership of the country's Republican Party.
