Washington: The reconstruction of Gaza will take years... and progress towards making the Strip demilitarized

Washington - Ofoq News - The US administration said that the reconstruction of the Gaza Strip will be an arduous and complex process, and will take years, noting that there is progress that it described as tangible towards establishing a demilitarized strip, according to an American statement published coinciding with the one-year anniversary of the Sharm El-Sheikh Peace Summit.

The statement stressed that reconstruction represents the beginning of a long phase that requires great efforts, despite what it described as the steps that have been achieved, including the continuation of the ceasefire, the establishment of a peace council and the formation of a technocratic Palestinian administration to take over the management of the sector, in addition to preparing a plan for recovery and reconstruction.

Washington added that the goal is to reach a demilitarized Gaza, allowing the Palestinians to live away from the rule of Hamas, and providing Israel with what the statement described as real and sustainable security.

On the other hand, the reconstruction process still faces major challenges, in light of the widespread destruction of infrastructure, homes, and basic facilities, and the continued suffering of hundreds of thousands of displaced people, many of whom live in tents and temporary housing.

Gaza's recovery and reconstruction needs are estimated at $71.4 billion over ten years, according to a joint assessment by the World Bank, the United Nations, and the European Union issued in April 2026.
