Britain accuses two men of helping Iran in connection with the Fairford base incident

On Tuesday, British prosecutors filed charges against two men under the National Security Act in connection with an incident last September at the British Royal Air Force’s Fairford base, which the United States used to carry out strikes against Iran.

The British Public Prosecution Authority also stated that Muhammad Abdel Karim (24 years old) is facing a charge of engaging in behavior that is likely to provide material support to a foreign intelligence service, while Noman Isghir (24 years old) was charged with entering a prohibited website for the purpose of harming Britain’s interests on August 22. The two men are scheduled to appear in court later today.

For his part, the head of the National Counter-Terrorism Police in Britain, Lawrence Taylor, said that the security services believe that the country to which Abdul Karim was providing assistance is Iran.

This came after British police announced earlier today that they had again arrested two men on suspicion of assisting a foreign intelligence service as part of their investigation into the incident.

The Anti-Terrorism Police stated in a statement that they had again arrested a British man whom they had arrested for the first time in front of the Fairford base.

She also added that she had also arrested another man who holds dual British and Iranian citizenship, whom she had arrested earlier in London.

Taylor also said in a statement, “The investigation is still very actively underway, and we are continuing to collect evidence.”

But he stressed that "our position at this stage has not changed, as we believe that it is highly likely that the Iranian state is involved in the matter," according to Reuters.

It is noteworthy that American bombers had previously used Fairford Air Base to launch raids on Iran. But the B-1 planes were withdrawn shortly after five Britons were arrested outside the military base in the southwest of the country in the early hours of September 27.

The police later arrested two other men, but released all seven on bail. Then today, the Counter-Terrorism Unit announced the second arrest of two people under the National Security Law.

British Prime Minister Andy Burnham suggested last week that the activities that took place at the Fairford base were carried out with coordination from within Iran. This was denied by Tehran's ambassador to London.
