A tanker was attacked Thursday while crossing the Strait of Hormuz, the UK's Maritime Trade Operations Agency said.
The agency announced on the X platform that “a tanker was hit by an unknown projectile while crossing the Strait of Hormuz, which led to a fire.”
The agency indicated that the crew was reported to be fine, without specifying which flag the tanker was flying or the port from which it sailed or whether it was an oil or gas tanker.
The Strait of Hormuz, which was a passage for about a fifth of the world's energy supplies before the war, has become at the heart of the conflict that the United States and Israel sparked in late February by launching strikes against Iran.
Since then, the Islamic Republic has been obstructing navigation in the strait and firing at ships it accuses of crossing unauthorized routes, while Washington has imposed a blockade on Iranian ports in response.
The region has witnessed relative calm on the ground in recent weeks, as the United States has not launched any strikes against Iran since September 1, despite repeatedly targeting ships in the Strait of Hormuz.
