Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian will head to Russia next week, to hold a meeting with his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, within the framework of strengthening bilateral relations and coordination on regional and international issues, according to what Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi announced on Friday.
During his visit to Tehran on October 19, Pezeshkian discussed with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov ways to accelerate the implementation of the agreements signed between the two countries, with a focus on the areas of energy, transportation and trade, according to what was reported by Reuters.
During the meeting, the Iranian President stressed the importance of strengthening political and diplomatic coordination between Tehran and Moscow, expressing his hope that his upcoming visit to Russia will contribute to transforming existing agreements into practical steps and tangible results.
For his part, Araqchi said, after his talks with Lavrov, that the two countries discussed regional and international issues, including developments in the Middle East, in addition to expanding economic and nuclear cooperation.
The Iranian president's visit comes at a time when Tehran and Moscow are seeking to strengthen their political and economic partnership, in light of Western pressure and regional tensions, amid efforts to transform the agreements signed between the two countries into implementable projects.
In Moscow in January 2025, Pezeshkian and Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a comprehensive strategic partnership treaty spanning 20 years, covering the fields of defence, security, energy, trade and transportation, in addition to coordinating positions on international issues. The treaty entered into force in October of the same year, but it does not include a commitment to mutual military defense between the two countries, according to Reuters.
In the latest rapprochement stations, Pezeshkian discussed with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, during his visit to Tehran on October 19, accelerating the implementation of bilateral agreements, while giving priority to energy, transportation, trade, and electricity generation projects. The Iranian President expressed his hope that his upcoming visit to Moscow would contribute to achieving tangible results, instead of being satisfied with political understandings.
It is expected that the Pezeshkian-Putin talks will provide an opportunity to follow up on the implementation of existing agreements and expand economic cooperation, in addition to discussing regional and international developments. But the size of the practical results will remain linked to the ability of the two sides to overcome the obstacles facing joint projects, and to transform political rapprochement into clear implementation steps.
